Garment workers have rejected the government’s offered 9% yearly wages rise. Workers in Ashulia, Savar’s garment industries are on strike and demanding a number of privileges. Workers from a number of Ashulia companies went on strike on Thursday, December 12, in protest of the government’s proposed 9% yearly pay raise for garment workers. Eight other factories have been closed as a result. Eleven plants were shut down earlier Wednesday as a result of worker unhappiness.

Garment workers have rejected: Workers in Ashulia’s factories have been requesting a 15% raise in annual earnings or increments, a minimum wage of 25,000 Taka, and full payment of accumulated annual leave each year, according to leaders and employees of several labor organizations as well as workers from other factories. Workers from various Ashulia factories went to work as normal today in support of these requests, but instead of beginning work, they started a work stoppage within the factories. The workers halted again soon after, even though some factories had started up again earlier.

According to Ashulia Industrial Zone Police-1 Superintendent of Police (SP) Muhammad Mominul Islam, the workers have ceased operations because they are dissatisfied with their higher pay.
