Government rice purchase has decreased during the Aman season, as farmers are unwilling to sell their rice to the government because to high market prices. In the Rajshahi division, there is concern regarding the lowest Aman rice procurement in the previous five years. In one month, the Food Directorate met only 0.7% of its target. Farmers claim that they are paid 100 to 200 taka more each month on the market than the government price. To address the situation, commentators have advocated for a reform in procurement policy.
Government rice purchase has decreased: The current Aman season in the Rajshahi division has seen a decrease in government rice procurement. In the 2024-25 season, only 0.7% of the acquisition target was met.
Previously, in the 2020-21 season, Aman rice procurement was 1.22% of target. The following season’s figure was 12%. It was 0.15% in 2022-23 and increased to 11% in 2023-24.
This year, the government price for rice is 1,320 taka per month, whereas the market price ranges from 1,500 to 1,600 taka. Farmers claim that selling rice on the open market is less challenging.
One farmer stated, “The price of rice is slightly higher outside (in the market)—about 100 to 120 taka more. And the government will buy it, but only after a month, and for 1,320 taka. “The government is buying rice at a lower price.”
According to analysts, the problem will persist unless the government’s procurement policy changes. The price must be set with farmers’ interests in mind.
Professor Aminul Haque of Rajshahi University’s Faculty of Agriculture stated, “The government tries to buy rice when the season is almost over. This mismatch explains why the government has little interest in farmers. This occurs because farmers are not confident of receiving sufficient remuneration after selling their grains.”
Officials from the Food Directorate have claimed that attempts are being made to narrow the gap between market and government prices.
Main Uddin, the Regional Food Controller of Rajshahi Division, stated, “We typically buy rice for 10 to 15 days.” In that circumstance, farmers would normally sell rice to the government. This procedure is followed universally. The administration is looking into the entire procurement process you stated.”
The government’s aim for Aman rice acquisition in the Rajshahi Division is 56,369 tons. So far, around 400 tons have been collected. The procedure will continue until February 28.
