Government Suhrawardy College… Mufti, a student at Kabi Nazrul College, recalled the atmosphere in the exam hall. He had come to the Suhrawardy College facility in Old Dhaka to take the final test of his first year at Dhaka University.
Today, Sunday (November 24), the final test on the “History of the Emergence of Independent Bangladesh” at Dhaka University-affiliated colleges began on time at 12:30 PM. Shortly after the exam began, students from Dr. Mahbubur Rahman Molla College, along with students from 35 other colleges, launched an unexpected attack.
In protest of their classmate’s claimed death from medical malpractice, Dr. Mahbubur Rahman Molla College students staged a human chain at the National Medical Institute on Thursday, November 21.
The demonstrators claim that during the rally, they were attacked by some students dressed in Suhrawardy College and Kabi Nazrul College uniforms. Government Suhrawardy College appears to be in destroyed….
In response to this incident, a group of students carrying sticks broke through the main gate and into Suhrawardy College’s main campus on Sunday, November 24. They damaged two motorcycles, a private vehicle, an ambulance, and a microbus on the college grounds. The digital notice board on campus was also destroyed during the attack.
From the ground floor of the ancient building, the students ascended to the second story, where they looted and damaged the English and Bengali departments as well as the office space. Additionally, they caused damage to the departments of Islamic Studies, Geography, and Environmental Science that were housed in the same building. The Bengali department’s head, Professor Saiful Islam, told The Daily Campus, “The students left nothing untouched, whether belonging to the college or the department.” He went on to say that during the rampage, bundles of exam scripts from different years were also stolen. The destruction also extended to the department’s computers, laptops, and scanners.
The teachers were stranded in front of the auditorium throughout this period. Professor Dr. Kakoli Mukhopadhyay, the college’s principal, told The Daily Campus, “I called the police, I called the army, but no one came to help.”
“I am still trapped and haven’t had the opportunity to go outside,” she said in response to a question concerning the magnitude of the damage. But from what I can tell, the majority of the college’s computers have been destroyed. The whole college has become a shambles. She went on to ask, “If they are indeed students, under what principles did they turn another educational institution into such devastation?”
The front gate of National Medical College was first blocked and vandalized earlier today by students from Dr. Mahbubur Rahman Molla College. They then went into Kabi Nazrul Government College and started causing damage.
