Start of rice imports from India
After the government removed all import duties, rice imports restarted through Dinajpur’s Hili land port after a 19-month and 10-day hiatus.
On Monday, November 11, at 12 p.m., the first shipment of rice arrived in the country from India, and rice prices are expected to fall as a result.
Md. Mostafizur Rahman, an importer at Hili Land Port, stated that the government eliminated all rice import levies on October 31 in order to curb rising prices. Following that, rice importers petitioned the proper government ministry for import clearance. Following approval on Sunday, rice imports from India commenced today, Monday.
Another importer, Lalit Keshra, proprietor of Messrs Sairam International, indicated that rice is imported in compliance with government directives to ensure a consistent supply of rice in the country and keep prices under control. Md. Yusuf Ali, Sub-Assistant at Hili Land Port’s Plant Quarantine Center, stated that the government suspended rice imports on March 30 of last year. At the time, the government established a 62% rice tariff to deter imports. Since then, no rice imports have passed via Hili Land Port.
