Students in Narsingdi captured the Chairman of the Weaving Board, as well as 14 other officials. To urge their demands, Narsingdi Textile Engineering College students have detained the Chairman of the Weaving Board, the Additional Deputy Commissioner of Narsingdi, the UNO of Sadar Upazila, the principal, and 14 other officials.
Students in Narsingdi captured: The detention began at 12 p.m. on Monday (January 5). Discussions are currently taking place in front of the troops.
Abu Ahmed Siddiquee (NDC), Chairman of the Weaving Board; Mohammad Mizanur Rahman, Member (Planning and Implementation) (Additional Secretary); Akramuzzaman, Joint Secretary and Director (Administration) (Acting); Sukumar Chandra Saha, Chief Accountant and Project Director (Acting); Md. Ayub Ali, Project Director (Acting); Md. Manzurul Islam, Manager (Operations); Md. Saiful Haque, Principal of Narsingdi Textile Engineering College, Mahbubul Haque; and fourteen others are among those confined.
According to the students, they have been demonstrating for a long time to move the college from the Weaving Board’s jurisdiction to the Department of Textiles. The students have engaged in a number of meetings, get-togethers, and human chains with higher officials in Dhaka as part of this effort. Their requests have not been implemented, despite the government’ repeated assurances to the contrary. As a result, today the officials were imprisoned by the students.
According to the imprisoned officials, the purpose of their visit to the college was to hold a conference with the goal of addressing the institution’s numerous problems and honoring the long-standing demands of the students. The students confined them with a single demand while they were holding the conference in a room.
The students clarified that, in accordance with the requirements of a textile college, professors were expected to teach the classes after students enrolled. But instead, diploma-level teachers are teaching the classes. They further claimed that additional funds were being taken from them on a number of false pretenses.
They added that this college ought to function similarly to the nation’s nine other textile engineering colleges. But the authorities aren’t doing so for unknown reasons.
According to the students, 325 students are enrolled in this college’s Textile Engineering department’s B.Sc. program, however they are not receiving any education. According to them, Mahbubul Haque, the principal of the Diploma Engineering program, is taking on more duties in order to increase his income. Consequently, he has subordinate teachers working under his direction teach the B.Sc. Engineering course.
Despite the students’ pleas, the principal refuses to transfer the college to the Department of Textiles because of these benefits.
As a result, the students have constrained the officials to a single demand. They have vowed that the officials will remain detained till their demand is met.
The Chairman of the Weaving Board, Abu Ahmed Siddiquee (NDC), revealed that when gathering in the college hall to address the students’ concerns, they were constrained by the students in pursuit of their single demand. After learning of the incident, the Deputy Commissioner, Mohammad Rashed Hossain Chowdhury, arrived and informed the students that their concerns would be transmitted to higher authorities. However, the students stated that they will continue to demonstrate until their demands are realized.
