In the highly publicized August 21 grenade attack case, the High Court cleared all of the defendants, including former State Minister for Home Affairs Lutfozzaman Babar, who was given a death sentence, and Tarique Rahman, who was given a life sentence.

The hearing of the defendants’ petitions for acquittal and the case’s death reference was concluded on November 21. A little before 11:00 AM on Sunday, the verdict was read. The High Court declared the ruling, clearing all of the accused, at approximately 11:45 AM. In addition, the court ruled that the case was illegal.

Notably, on August 11, 12, and 15, 54 High Court benches were reconfigured by newly appointed Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed, who also changed their jurisdictions. Twenty-four persons were killed in a grenade attack on Awami League President Sheikh Hasina’s rally on August 21, 2004. According to the Awami League, the attack had a political motive.
