The event entailed chases and counter-chases, resulting in at least 20 injuries on both sides.
At least 20 people were injured: The incident began before nightfall on Sunday (January 12), and police came on the location about 7 p.m. to put the situation under control. Among the injured are Mehedi Hasan Shimul (20), Al Amin (18), and 20 others whose identities are unknown. However, the complete number of injured victims has yet to be confirmed.
A college student, who asked to remain anonymous, reported that the college officials levied a price of 7,000 BDT per year for dormitory seat renewal. However, the students demanded that the tuition be cut to 5,500 BDT. Recently, the college administration cut the fee by 500 BDT. This decision enraged the students, resulting in the clash.
During the event, Ashiqur Rahman, the coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, was there, as were Chhatra Dal members.
Professor Md. Aman Ullah Aman, the Principal of Ananda Mohan College, indicated that the trouble began with the renewal of dormitory seats. Currently, police are striving to totally manage the situation. The college and dormitory have been closed for three days owing to the event.
Md. Ashiqur Rahman, one of the coordinators of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, stated, “The kids attacked us for no reason. At least ten students from our side were harmed. “Those who attacked us should be arrested.”
Regarding the incident, Md. Shafiqul Islam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Mymensingh Kotwali Model Police Station, revealed that tensions rose when ordinary students in the dormitory began agitating on college grounds. The situation became more serious when Ashiqur Rahman Ashik, one of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement’s coordinators, and others arrived. Both groups then clashed and counter-chased, armed with sticks. During the confrontation, at least 20 people on both sides were injured. The injured are being treated at several hospitals.
He added that the situation is currently peaceful. However, police have been stationed on campus due to concerns that another incident will occur. The incident will be investigated, and the perpetrators will be found and prosecuted.
