Officials and employees of Rajshahi University (RU) observed a day-long work stoppage program demanding the reinstatement of the dependent quota. On Wednesday (January 8), from 9 AM to 4 PM, a group of officials and employees observed this program at the Shaheed Buddhijibi Chattar of the university. During the program, Abdul Malek, an official of the university, said, ‘We have no conflict with our student brothers and sisters. Perhaps they are being misled without understanding the situation.

Institutional benefits have existed since the dawn of time. The children of officials and employees have a rightful claim to the institution where their parents work. When the dependent quota exists throughout Bangladesh, why should we alone be deprived?
Acting President of the RU Officers’ Association Moktar Hossain spoke at the event and stated, “Today’s strike is to demand our rightful entitlements. The administration must accept this demand. If this administration expresses helplessness, isn’t there a government in the country? Is the Bangladesh government not aware of our movement? They have the power to restore our rightful entitlements if they choose to.”
He went on: “Institutional rights exist in all institutions across Bangladesh. At Dhaka University, Chittagong University, Jahangirnagar University, and even at Kushtia University, admission opportunities are granted if the eligibility criteria are met. Our struggle will continue until the rights of our children, similar to those in other universities, are reinstated.”
It is significant that on January 2, under pressure from student protests, the RU administration was compelled to abolish the dependent quota reserved for teachers, officials, and employees. This decision sparked significant resentment among the teachers, officials, and employees. In response, they organized a two-hour sit-in protest on Tuesday and a human chain program on Monday.
