Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister: Ishaq Dar made the following statement at a press conference in Islamabad on Thursday (January 2).
He also stated in the press conference that Pakistan’s diplomatic isolation would end within a year. He clarified: “Our foreign office has stated that we will pursue economic diplomacy.” While announcing preparations to visit Dhaka, the Pakistani minister referred to Bangladesh as a crucial partner in collaboration.
In the news conference, Ishaq Dar reiterated Pakistan’s hard stance on the ongoing slaughter in Gaza and openly lambasted the Israeli Prime Minister, claiming that Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs is efficiently carrying out its duties. He also reaffirmed Pakistan’s determination to raise the Kashmir issue in all international venues.
For many years after Bangladesh gained independence in 1971, there was no direct trade between the two countries. During the reign of Bangladesh’s ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, relations between the two countries were strained.
Since the Awami League came to power in 2009, import-export activity with Pakistan have gradually decreased. Following the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government on August 5, amid student and public protests, Pakistan made a number of efforts to strengthen relations with Bangladesh.
Recently, a cargo ship from Karachi, a port city in southern Pakistan, anchored immediately in Chattogram, Bangladesh. This is the first time a Pakistani cargo ship has anchored in Bangladesh since 1971. This direct marine connection between the two countries is being referred to be historic.
