Primary teachers give an ultimatum until Wednesday noon to revoke the High Court’s decision. The recommended assistant teachers for primary schools have stated that their discussions at the Secretariat did not yield any fruitful results. As a result, they have decided to continue their protest. This announcement was made on Tuesday (February 11) in front of the National Museum at Shahbagh.
Primary teachers give an ultimatum: Jannatul Naim, a member of the six-member delegation that visited the Secretariat, said, “We met with Secretary Abu Taher Mohammad Masud Alam. Just like before, we were reassured that this is a court verdict and that the authority lies with the judges. They urged us to have faith in the government.”
She further stated, “After meeting the secretary, we also spoke with the advisor, who assured us that none of the 6,531 recommended teachers would be left out. At this point, we had nothing more to say except to request the government to expedite the legal process and ensure our appointment as soon as possible.”
Naim added, “The government keeps reassuring us, but we are no longer willing to return home without a resolution. This time, we will remain on the streets until our demands are met, and our protest will continue.”
The protesting teachers have issued an ultimatum until Wednesday at noon for the revocation of the High Court’s decision. If their demands are not met within this time frame, they have warned of stricter protest measures.
Earlier, on Monday, the recommended primary teachers blocked Shahbagh intersection as part of their demonstration. However, police used water cannons, sound grenades, batons, and tear gas to disperse them, detaining several protesters.
The affected teachers explained that the Primary Assistant Teacher Recruitment-2023 notice was issued in three phases. While the final appointment process for the first and second phases was completed, including hiring candidates from the waiting list, the third phase remains unresolved.
They also mentioned that the recommended candidates had already undergone medical tests at their respective district civil surgeon offices and submitted all necessary documents, including police verification forms, to the district education offices. Many candidates across various districts had even received their appointment letters. However, they remain unable to join their positions, leaving 6,531 families in deep distress and humiliation.
On February 6, the High Court canceled the appointment of 6,531 candidates who had passed the final selection process for assistant teacher positions in Dhaka and Chattogram divisions. The court ordered a fresh recruitment process based on merit.
