Job seekers are back on the streets demanding the age limit for government jobs to be raised to 35 for men and 37 for women. On Monday, at 11:30 a.m., several hundred protesters gathered in front of Shahbagh’s National Museum. Around 3:30 p.m., they began a protest march toward the Secretariat. When they arrived in front of the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education via Doel Chattar, they were met by police resistance. The road from the Directorate of Education to the GPO became impassible as they arrived.
Job seekers are back on the streets: Protesters chanted slogans like “One demand, one goal, 35, 35,” “The fire is lit, the blood is boiling,” “My brother’s blood, my sister’s blood—won’t let it go in vain,” alongside “Ignite, ignite, light the fire.”
One of the protestors, Manjurul Islam, told bdnews24.com in the afternoon that they had been holding a protest in front of the National Museum since the morning. They are adamant about having the situation solved.
He remarked, “The Public Administration Reform Commission has proposed that the minimum age for employment applications be 35 years. It also advised leaving the age limit open in some circumstances.
“However, the interim government has set an age limit of 32 years. We do not accept this and have resumed our protest. The movement will continue until our demands are met.”
Nilufa Yasmin, a job seeker and Jagannath University student who participated in the protest march, stated, “We organized the event to demand the execution of the Public Administration Reform Commission’s recommendations. The movement has resumed, and we will proceed to more stringent measures.”
“The Reform Commission recommended a maximum age of 35 years for men and 37 years for women. “We will continue to protest until this demand is met,” she stated.
Nilufa said, “We were attempting to march towards the Secretariat, but the police stopped us. We will remain here until our demands are met.”
Over the last decade, there has been recurrent demand to raise the maximum age limit for government employment applicants to 35 years, however this has not happened under the Awami League’s rule. After the political environment changed and the agitation for this demand continued, the interim government decided to raise the maximum age limit for government employment applicants from 30 to 32 years.
This decision has been opposed by the “Coordinated Council of General Students Demanding a 35-Year Age Limit for Job Applications.”
