According to Reuters, the MNDAA is one of numerous armed ethnic groups in Myanmar attempting to force the military out of territory they claim.
The MNDAA is affiliated with the so-called “Three Brotherhood Alliance.” This rebel coalition also includes the Arakan Army (AA) and the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA). Since initiating a coordinated onslaught against Myanmar’s ruling junta in October 2023, the alliance has gained control of broad areas near China’s border.
In July, the MNDAA, which is made up of ethnic Chinese from Myanmar, said that it had captured a Myanmar military headquarters near the Chinese border.
According to analysts, Myanmar’s anti-junta troops are advancing towards Mandalay, driving the military out of critical border regions. China is worried with their progress.
Myanmar has been in serious difficulty since the military took over control in February 2021, deposing the civilian government.
China has a 2,000-kilometer border with Myanmar. China is concerned about the possibility of unrest along this border, which could jeopardize investment and trade.
