Members who will not be nominated to the peacekeeping mission. Military or police personnel associated with RAB, DGFI, the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, or BGB battalions and those involved in human rights violations in 2024 will not be nominated for the United Nations peacekeeping mission.
Members who will: This was stated in a report published by the United Nations Fact-Finding Mission on Wednesday, February 12. The UN Human Rights Commission (OHCHR) has released an investigative report on human rights violations that occurred in Bangladesh during the mass uprising in July-August 2024.
The published report includes various recommendations for the Bangladesh government from the Human Rights Commission.
The OHCHR has urged the government to establish an effective and robust independent human rights screening mechanism to ensure that no Bangladeshi personnel deployed in UN peacekeeping missions or other international missions are accused of violating international human rights, humanitarian, or refugee laws, or of sexual harassment or misconduct.
Additionally, the report recommends that, based on international and civil society opinions, a comprehensive, independent, and fair vetting process should be implemented to remove commissioned officers in the police, intelligence agencies, BGB, Ansar VDP, and armed forces who are involved in serious human rights violations or corruption.
The Human Rights Commission has also suggested passing an ordinance specifying that armed forces personnel may be deployed for internal security duties only for a limited period under special circumstances. It has called for the ordinance to be passed as soon as possible. Law enforcement authorities should ensure that their deployment is made transparent to the public with proper authorization.
