At New Market, an attack on the police to snatch away a Chhatra Dal leader; 7 injured, including an assistant commissioner. Mohammad Hossain, also known as Mithun, a Chhatra Dal leader arrested in a case for attempting to murder two businessmen by hacking them on Elephant Road, was forcefully snatched from police custody by his accomplices.
At New Market, an attack: The incident occurred early this Friday morning. During the attack, at least seven people, including the Assistant Commissioner of New Market Zone police, were injured.
Masud Alam, Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Ramna Division, told Samakal that the incident took place while the suspect was being taken to New Market Police Station after his arrest. Around 4 a.m., several individuals surrounded the police vehicle in front of the station and attempted to free the suspect. The attack injured several police officers. However, the attackers were eventually apprehended by the police, and a separate case has been filed against them.
According to police sources, Mithun’s name was mentioned in the statements of those already arrested in a case involving the attempted murder of two businessmen in front of the Multiplan Center on Elephant Road in the city on January 10. Mithun was arrested based on the information provided.
Because it was early morning, the cops did not expect any opposition. However, Mithun’s acquaintances and supporters had already gathered in front of the police station. They encircled the police truck transporting Mithun and attempted to liberate him. During the attempt, the attackers punched, shoved, and physically assaulted the police officers, injuring them. Later, other cops from the station arrived and apprehended the attackers.
