Afghanistan and Sri Lanka dominate

Afghanistan and Sri Lanka dominate the Team of the Year; no Bangladeshi or Indian cricketers included. The ICC has released the lists of the 2024 ODI and Test Teams of the Year. The governing body of cricket released these lists on its official website on Friday (January 24).

Afghanistan and Sri Lanka dominate: Charith Asalanka, the Sri Lankan star, has been selected captain of the ODI team. Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, and Pakistan dominated the Best XI. Notably, neither Bangladeshi nor Indian cricketers made the team. Cricketers from Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and England were all absent from the ICC ODI Team of the Year. The team has the most players from Sri Lanka (four), followed by Pakistan and Afghanistan (three each) and one from the West Indies.

Meanwhile, Pat Cummins has been selected captain of the Test Team of the Year. Once again, no Bangladeshi players made it onto this renowned list.

Last year, England’s veteran star Joe Root was the leading run-scorer in Tests, having a great run with the bat. He faced strong opposition from India’s youthful opener, Yashasvi Jaiswal. On the bowling front, Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah stood out for his excellent wicket-taking abilities and economy rate, making him unstoppable in the format.

The ICC Men’s Test Team of the Year consists of four players from England, three from India, two from New Zealand, and one each from Australia and Sri Lanka.

ICC ODI Team of the Year:

Saim Ayub, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Mendis (wicketkeeper), Charith Asalanka (captain), Sherfane Rutherford, Azmatullah Omarzai, Wanindu Hasaranga, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Haris Rauf, and Allah Mohammad Ghazanfar.

ICC Test Team of the Year:

Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ben Duckett, Kane Williamson, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Kamindu Mendis, Jamie Smith (wicketkeeper), Ravindra Jadeja, Pat Cummins (captain), Matt Henry, and Jasprit Bumrah.
