The Awami League announced plans for blockades and ‘strict’ hartals (strikes) in February to protest against the interim government’s resignation and ‘misrule and oppression’. The Awami League has called for strikes on February 16 and February 18 to demand the resignation of the “illegal” interim government and to protest “misrule and oppression.” This announcement was made via the party’s verified Facebook page on Tuesday night.
The Awami League announced: According to the statement, the party plans to take to the streets starting February 1 to demand the resignation of the interim government and implement its strike and blockade programs.
As per the announced schedule, the party will distribute leaflets or flyers from Saturday, February 1, to Wednesday, February 5, to promote their demands.
On Thursday, February 6, protests and rallies will be held across the country. Demonstrations and rallies are also scheduled for February 10.
A nationwide blockade is planned for Sunday, February 16, followed by a dawn-to-dusk “strict” nationwide strike on Tuesday, February 18.
The press release also called for the withdrawal of murder cases and other charges against Sheikh Hasina and others in the International Crimes Tribunal, as well as the cessation of “mock trials.”
In the press release, the ousted party referred to Sheikh Hasina as the “Prime Minister.”
Previously, on November 10, the ousted party had announced plans to take to the streets but failed to do so.
Despite this backdrop, the Awami League has now announced strikes, blockades, rallies, and protests.
Since being ousted from power on August 5, the party has not been visibly active anywhere in Bangladesh. Most of its top leaders are either abroad, in hiding, or in prison. Awami League President Sheikh Hasina fled to India during the mass protests and has been residing there since.
