In front of her boyfriend: Garcia was a 22-year-old student at the University of Navarra in Spain, where he studied international relations and law. The northwest Spanish city of Valladolid was where she lived.
The media outlet El Mundo stated that Koh Yao Yai, Thailand, authorities said the elephant had hit Garcia with its trunk. Its tusks, however, did not injure anyone or produce any bleeding.
At least 18 individuals, including Garcia’s boyfriend, were present during the incident, according to the proprietor of the elephant care center. The incident did not injure anyone else. After being transported to a nearby hospital, Garcia was declared deceased.
According to experts, the elephant may have been experiencing mental stress as a result of interacting with people outside of its native habitat, as reported by the Spanish newspaper Clarín.
The University of Navarra’s Faculty of Law, meantime, posted a statement on its website the day following the accident. The statement requested prayers and offered condolences for the student’s passing. The Mayor of Valladolid, Jesús Julio Carnero, paid tribute to Garcia on X, sharing a statement of sorrow and a photo of her.
According to authorities at the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the consulate in Bangkok is in contact with the deceased’s relatives. According to the Daily Mail and El Mundo, the Koh Yao Elephant Care Centre is presently shuttered following the tourist’s death.
This incident occurred less than a month after a 49-year-old lady was killed by an elephant while walking inside Phu Kradueng National Park. According to World Animal Protection, almost 2,800 elephants are held in captivity at tourist attractions around Thailand.
