MPA teachers’ savings of 6,000 crore takas missing. The savings of 6,000 crore taka deposited by MPO-enlisted teachers have completely disappeared after the bank where the money was kept went bankrupt. The teachers’ hard-earned money was stored in that bank, and this was done through collusion. This is not a small amount—if the 6,000-crore taka had been available, it could have been used to pay teachers’ pensions and settle all financial obligations.
MPA teachers’ savings: This information was revealed by Dr. Wahiduddin Mahmud, Planning and Education Advisor, during the preliminary report publication event of the Economic Census 2024 on Wednesday. The event was held at the conference room of the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) in Agargaon, where he was present as the chief guest.
Dr. K.A.S. Murshid, President of the Economic Task Force, attended as a special guest, while the event was presided over by Mohammad Mizanur Rahman, Director General of the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics. Other speakers included Project Director S.M. Shakil Akhter and Joint Secretary of the Statistics and Information Management Division, Dr. Dipankar Roy.
In his speech, Dr. Wahiduddin Mahmud stated that the positive aspect is that remittance inflows are increasing, which brings hope. The growth in remittances is benefiting rural areas, boosting the service sector there.
He also mentioned that political interference in statistics had been an issue in the past, but efforts are now being made to put an end to this. The Statistics Act is being amended to ensure transparency. He humorously added that, under the current system, his signature is required to approve data on GDP growth, inflation, and other economic indicators. He simply signs the documents without reviewing them and later finds out from newspapers what information BBS has published. However, in the digital era, providing false information or hiding data is no longer possible.
