The current government has failed

The current government has failed to stop Rohingyas at the border. According to Foreign Affairs Advisor Md. Touhid Hossain, corruption at the border has made it extremely impossible to prevent Rohingya immigration via multiple land and marine routes. This comment was delivered during a briefing on the recently finished Bangkok visit, while replying to journalists’ queries at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday afternoon (December 22).

The current government has failed: The Foreign Affairs Advisor highlighted the subject of border corruption, saying, “There is significant corruption at the border, and that is a fact.” Denial serves no purpose. Rohingyas are infiltrating via corruption. However, they do not enter through a single border. The infiltration through numerous borders makes it extremely difficult to manage.”

He stated, “I don’t believe there will be another inflow, though some others do, and we share their concern. However, efforts must be made to prevent such an influx, with the assistance of the international community.”

When asked about the current influx of 60,000 Rohingyas from Rakhine into Bangladesh over the last two months, he said, “Our policy has been to not allow any more Rohingyas to enter. However, sometimes we are left with no alternative. In such conditions, we permitted 60,000 Rohingya to enter. It’s not that we formally approved them admittance; they came in through a variety of means.”

Regarding the Bangkok visit, he stated, “An informal consultative meeting among six countries was held last Thursday (December 19) in Bangkok, chaired by Thailand’s Foreign Minister, Don Pramudwinai.” Than Swe, Myanmar’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, was among those who attended the conference.
