The death toll in Tibet has reached nearly 100 as a result of a 6.8 magnitude earthquake. A 6.8 magnitude earthquake in Tibet, located in the northern Himalayas, has killed 95 people and injured at least 130 more, according to reports. Xinhua, China’s state-run media channel, predicts that the number of casualties will climb.
The death toll in Tibet: The tremor was felt in Nepal, Bhutan, southern China, and northern India. However, no casualty reports have been received from those countries or regions yet.
The earthquake’s first shock happened at 9:05 a.m. on Tuesday. Following the original 6.8 magnitude tremor, several dozen aftershocks were registered over the next few minutes, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center, which detects and studies earthquakes. Each aftershock was magnitude 4.4 or slightly higher. The initial tremor was 7.1 magnitude, according to the United States Geological Survey.
According to a Reuters report citing Xinhua, the earthquake’s epicenter was 10 kilometers underground near Tingri, a Tibetan village. The distance from the epicenter to Mount Everest, the highest peak in the Himalayas, is only 80 kilometers. Tingri is best recognized as the northernmost entry point to the Everest region.
According to Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), the tremor was felt in all seven districts on the country’s Tibetan border.
Dwijan Bhattarai, spokesperson for the NDRRMA, told Reuters that there had been no reports of injuries or damage in Nepal. However, police, security forces, and local officials have been directed to collect precise information regarding the situation in the border districts.”
Tibet is an autonomous region or province of China. The Shigatse region, home to at least 800,000 people, was the most severely damaged by the earthquake in the province.
Chinese President Xi Jinping issued an immediate statement announcing the commencement of a full-scale search and rescue operation for the missing. Efforts are already underway to get food, tents, and winter clothes to those affected as soon as possible. The President also stated that the government would help with the rehabilitation of the afflicted individuals.
