According to the National Board of Revenue (NBR), Western Marine Shipyard last exported a ship on January 29, 2020. On that day, the business exported two ships valued at $11 million to India. Ananda Shipyard and Slipways, headquartered in Dhaka, built the first ship shipped from Bangladesh. The adventure began on September 14, 2008, with the export of a ship to Denmark. Later, in 2010, Chattogram-based Western Marine Shipyard entered the ship export market. On November 30, that year, the business shipped an oceangoing vessel to Germany. These two companies are Bangladesh’s only ship exporters.
Although businesses in Bangladesh identified possibilities for ship exports a decade and a half ago, the expansion was brief. This was due to the global shipbuilding industry’s slump, which began in 2011 and has had a severe impact on Bangladesh. Many international buyers have canceled their export deals. The sector suffered severe blows following the outbreak of the COVID-19 epidemic and the Russia-Ukraine war. This combination of events had a significant impact on the entrepreneurs. The two ship exporting companies’ loans also became erratic. However, by utilizing the government’s particular policy support, they are already beginning to recover.
During the recession, Ananda Shipyard had to cancel orders for the construction of ten ships. This occurred while five of these ships were already under construction. Two years ago, the business shipped two ships to another buyer. The business has now identified customers for the three remaining ships under construction. If money is secured, they intend to complete and export these three ships.
When contacted, Tariqul Islam, Executive Director of Ananda Shipyard and Slipways, stated, “Two weeks ago, representatives from a Turkish buyer came to our yard.” If everything goes well, we’ll be able to finish the remaining construction on these three ships and export them.”
According to sources from the National Board of Revenue and entrepreneurs, 45 ships and vessels have been shipped since 2006. Of them, 19 are oceangoing vessels. The remainder are ferries and other forms of ocean-going vessels. The export of these ships and vessels generated almost 1,500 crore taka in foreign currency.
