The Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Indian High Commissioner in response to the building of barbed wire fencing along the border, which violated international law. On Sunday afternoon, the High Commissioner came at the Ministry to answer the summons.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs: Following meetings with the Foreign Secretary, the Indian High Commissioner informed reporters, “We discussed concerns linked to reducing smuggling and human trafficking along the border. We also secured an agreement on the erection of fencing for security reasons. Communication between the border security forces of both countries, the BSF and BGB, is still underway. Based on this understanding, we anticipate a collaborative effort from both sides to tackle crime effectively.”
The Indian Border Security Force (BSF) recently attempted to build barbed wire fencing at the Chouka border near Chapainawabganj, which violated international law. In protest, the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and local locals gathered at the border. After four rounds of flag discussions between the BGB and BSF last week, India halted construction activity.
On Sunday, retired Lieutenant General Mohammad Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, Home Affairs Advisor, indicated that if India goes forward with the barbed wire fencing in violation of international law, Bangladesh will oppose it. He stated that “India is constructing barbed wire fences at various points along the border in violation of international law.” Bangladesh will resist this activity, and the border security force, BGB, will maintain its attitude.”
According to the Indian media outlet Times of India, Bangladesh and West Bengal share a 2,216-kilometer border, with 50% of it unfenced.
Earlier, on December 3, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned Pranay Verma, the Indian High Commissioner, in protest of an attack on the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Agartala, the capital of India’s Tripura state.
