The former Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal leader was hacked to death over a dominance conflict. Manikganj, a former General Secretary of the Chhatra Dal, was hacked to death in a battle between two BNP groups over control of Ghior. The tragedy also harmed six additional people. The incident happened on Monday afternoon, December 9, in front of the Upazila Health Complex.

 

The former Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal: Lavu Mia, the deceased, was the son of the late Abdul Halim, who lived in Ghior Upazila’s Kusta village. He served as the Upazila Chhatra Dal’s previous general secretary. Md. Afikul Islam, joint convener of the Upazila Jubo Dal, Sohag (25), son of Md. Rofiq from Ghior Upazila Mor area, Tamim (25), son of Azad Khan, Md. Selim (28), son of Shah Alam, and Rahatuzzaman Khan Altaf (42), president of Ghior Sadar Union Jubo Dal and son of the late Din Islam from Kusta village, are among the injured.

Police and local sources claim that at around 12 PM on Monday, Sohag, Tanvir, Babu, Shital, Tamim, Selim, and at least 15 to 20 other people from the Upazila Mor region viciously attacked Jubo Dal leader Himel, a native of Kusta village, near the Ghior bus stop. Himel was hurt during the altercation between the two groups and was being transported to the Upazila Health Complex when he was attacked once more by the assailants. Later, the opposition group ambushed Union Jubo Dal president Rahatuzzaman Altaf, former Chhatra Dal leader Lavu Mia, and Upazila Jubo Dal Afikul Islam joint convener Rahatuzzaman Altaf when they headed to the hospital gate to check on the injured. Very badly hurt After being saved, Lavu was first treated at the Upazila Health Complex, where the attending physician recommended that he be sent to Dhaka. He was later transferred to Munno Medical College Hospital, where the attending physicians pronounced him dead.

Confirming the death of Lavu Ahmed, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Ghior Thana, Mohammad Rafiqul Islam, said, “A BNP leader has died in the clash between the two factions. Several others are injured.
