Fire at the Secretariat; Noyon's mother

Fire at the Secretariat; Noyon’s mother left speechless after losing her son. Firefighter Soanur Zaman Noyon intended to come home during his leave. However, when a fire broke out at the Secretariat, he rushed to put it out. He died in a truck accident while combating the flames. He had meant to return home after extinguishing the fire. His mother, Nargis Begum, was eagerly expecting his homecoming. Little did she realize that Noyon’s final appearance would be lifeless. After losing her only son, Noyon’s mother is now silent, often falling comatose in sadness.

Fire at the Secretariat; Noyon’s mother :  Noyon’s family members revealed that his father, Akhtaruzzaman, is a farmer by profession. They live in Charan Atparia village of Borobala Union, Mithapukur Upazila, Rangpur. Noyon was the youngest of Akhtaruzzaman’s two children (a daughter and a son). This bright young guy joined the Fire Service two years ago and has since been a pillar of support for his family.

His parents and sister centered their dreams around him. However, his unexpected and terrible death has left the family traumatized and unwilling to accept the loss. The bereaved relatives claim that Noyon’s untimely death was caused by the failure of the Fire Service unit and law enforcement authorities on the scene to block the route. This allowed a truck to enter the area, resulting in a tragic catastrophe.

Soanur’s nephew stated that Noyon was extremely dedicated to his work. He stated that if the police had set up barricades on the road during the fire event, the tragedy could have been avoided. The family is hoping that the government will step up to help them during this tough time.

Earlier, around 2 a.m. on Wednesday (December 26), a fire broke out in the Secretariat’s Building No. 7. After receiving the news, 19 Fire Service units were dispatched to suppress the fire. Among them was Noyon, a Special Unit soldier who had raced to the scene from Tejgaon on leave. He joined the firefighting effort.

While crossing the Secretariat road to attach a water pipe, he was hit by a fast truck. He was critically injured and brought to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), however he did not survive.

According to colleagues, Noyon was supposed to return home on leave on Thursday morning (December 26). He’d even packed his backpack the night before. However, when duty called in the middle of the night, he awoke and immediately reported to meet his professional obligations.

Rajib, a firefighter at the Tejgaon Fire Station, stated, “Last night, we enjoyed dinner together and even played volleyball. Later that night, the siren went off. The driver and eight team members immediately boarded a minibus bound toward the site. We followed around fifteen minutes later. Noyon was crossing the street with a water pipe on his shoulder when a fast truck slammed him from behind, knocking him to the ground. He was recovered in a damaged state and sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.”

According to Fire Service data, the fire alarm was received at 1:52 a.m. on Wednesday night. Firefighters arrived at the scene at 1:54 a.m. The Fire Service initially dispatched eight units to contain the fire, however the number of units was later increased. Eventually, 19 Fire Service units were dispatched to contain the fire. The fire was brought under control at 8:05 a.m. today, and by 11:45 a.m., the Fire Service had entirely extinguished it.
