Australia defeated India 3-1 in: However, following the series, a fresh dispute arose. Despite the fact that the series is named after them, one of the namesakes was not invited to the awards ceremony. One of the people who inspired the Australia-India Test series has made allegations. Only Allan Border was selected for the award presentation at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG).
Allan Border personally gave the Border Trophy to Australia’s series-winning captain, Pat Cummins. On the other side, Sunil Gavaskar was not even invited to the award ceremony! This has taken the Indian legend by surprise. He was not only surprised, but also frustrated by the situation.
After the series, Gavaskar told Australia’s ABC Sports, “I was apprised of the issue soon before the commencement of the Sydney Test. I was told that if India didn’t win or tie the series, they wouldn’t need me. I have no regrets about that. However, I was shocked. This is the Border-Gavaskar Trophy; both of us should have been present.”
In an additional interview with Australia’s Code Sports, the Indian legend stated, “It’s not that I’m not present. I am on the field. Australia won the series, so I shouldn’t have been there—it wasn’t supposed to be that way. The award presentation should have been the primary focus. They (Australia) played better cricket than us, thus they won. That is OK. But, as an Indian, I couldn’t hand over the prize. Allan Border is a good friend of mine. I would have felt better if I could have presented the award beside him.”
