Extortion by Chhatra Dal convener posing as OC; public handed him over to the police after a mass beating. Abdur Razzak, convener of Dinajpur Sadar Upazila Chhatra Dal, and his friend Apel were attacked by villagers while attempting to extort money by impersonating the police station’s Officer-in-Charge. They were later handed over to Kotwali Police Station, where a charge was lodged against them.

Extortion by Chhatra Dal convener: Following this incident, on Friday (January 10), Abdur Razzak was removed from his role as Chhatra Dal convener for violating organizational discipline. Earlier, on Thursday at 8 p.m., enraged residents beat him up in the Chakladar Pukurpar section of Bhatina Thakur Bari village, which is part of Sheikhpura Union No. 4 in the upazila.

Abdur Razzak, the detained and expelled Chhatra Dal leader, is the son of Rustam Ali of Nohana village in Sadar Upazila, while his colleague Apel is Shahadat’s son from the same area.

Chaitu Barman, the son of deceased Nirbhoy Barman from the Bhatina Thakur Bari region, has filed a lawsuit against the Chhatra Dal leader and his associates on grounds of extortion, abduction, and threats to murder.

Other accused in the case include Shahinur Islam, Abdus Sattar’s son from Nohana village; Shanto, Apan’s son; Akhtarul, Sahadul’s son; and Sri Ujjal Roy, Sri Tapas Roy, and Sri Mahesh Chandra Roy.

According to the case, police, and local sources, Iman Chandra Barman (22), Chaitu Barman’s son, started a romantic relationship with a 19-year-old female from the same village. They were married and lived in Tangail.

Following that, on Tuesday night (January 7), at around 11:45 p.m., Abdur Razzak and his accomplices arrived at Chaitu Chandra Barman’s house in Bhatina Thakur Bari village, Sheikhpura Union No. 4, via microbus. Posing as the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kotwali Police Station, Razzak stated there were complaints against Chaitu Barman and summoned him to the police station.

They pulled Chaitu Barman into a white microbus without giving the family or locals an opportunity to interfere. They quizzed him inside the microbus in order to discover the address of his son. Later, they intimidated him before kidnapping him to Tangail.

They returned Chaitu and his son Iman from Tangail to Dinajpur at 10 p.m. on Wednesday night (January 8). They detained them at Mahesh Chandra Roy’s residence at Madhabpur Goalpara, Sheikhpura Union No. 4. They physically abused and intimidated them while seeking a one lakh taka ransom.

Chaitu, seeing no other way to save his and his son’s lives, decided to pay the ransom but only for one day. They were released the same night, but not before being threatened with additional legal action and death.

The following day, Thursday night, at 8 p.m., Chhatra Dal leader Abdur Razzak and his friends invited Chaitu and his son to Chakladar Pukurpar in Bhatina Thakur Bari village. They demanded the ransom money again and threatened to incriminate them in bogus charges.

When residents became suspicious about the scenario, they approached the spot. Abdur Razzak and his associates attempted to flee as the situation became increasingly tense. However, the enraged townspeople apprehended them and thrashed them mercilessly. They later phoned the national emergency number, 999, and turned them over to the police.

According to OC Matiur Rahman of Kotwali Police Station, Abdur Razzak and Apel were apprehended among the heated throng. A case has been brought against them.

Meanwhile, Abdur Razzak has been removed from his post as Sadar Upazila Chhatra Dal convener by the Chhatra Dal’s central committee. The central committee issued a press release on Friday announcing the affair.

According to a press release signed by Jahangir Alam, Central Office Secretary (Vice President Rank), Abdur Razzak, convener of the Sadar Upazila Chhatra Dal’s Dinajpur District branch, has been expelled from his organizational position due to specific allegations of violating organizational discipline.

The decision was endorsed today by Rakibul Islam Rakib, President of the Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, and Nasir Uddin Nasir, General Secretary. Chhatra Dal leaders and activists at all levels have been instructed not to maintain any organizational ties with him.
