Trump wants to visit China after taking an oath. Donald Trump, the freshly elected president of the United States, intends to visit China within the first 100 days of taking an oath to enhance relations with Chinese President Xi Jinping. This was reported by the Wall Street Journal on Saturday, January 19, according to sources.
Trump wants to visit China: The purpose of this visit is to build relations with the Chinese leader, amidst geopolitical tensions between the two nations caused by the Taiwan impasse and Trump’s threat to put tariffs on Chinese imports.
However, people familiar with the situation informed the Wall Street Journal that, while Trump has shown a desire in coming, no final decision has been made.
Earlier on Friday, Trump and Xi spoke via phone. The two presidents spoke on trade, Taiwan, and the situation with the Chinese-owned social media platform TikTok. Recently, the Biden administration enacted legislation to prohibit TikTok. However, it is unclear whether Trump discussed the possibility of visiting China during the phone call.
According to insiders, Trump has shown an interest in visiting both India and China. However, it is expected that internal matters such as the border situation and wildfires in California will require his urgent attention.
Trump visited Beijing in late 2017, more than nine months after taking office for his first term. Throughout the four years of the Trump administration, there was a continuing and tense standoff with China. The newly elected president placed tariffs totaling hundreds of billions of dollars on Chinese imports. His administration also put stringent restrictions on Chinese tech firms such as Huawei and ZTE, citing national security concerns.
Wang Shouwen, China’s Vice Minister of Commerce, has cautioned that these penalties may have a negative impact, raising prices for American consumers. China, on the other hand, feels it can withstand the consequences of such “external shocks.”
