At least 179 people were killed

At least 179 people were killed in a horrific jet crash in South Korea. A Jeju Airlines plane crash in South Korea reportedly killed 179 people, making it the biggest aviation tragedy of 2024. The ill-fated flight carried 181 passengers and crew. Two survivors have been retrieved from the wreckage, but the rest of the passengers and crew are feared dead. This sad tragedy is one of the most severe aviation disasters of the year, emphasizing long-standing worries about air travel safety.

At least 179 people were killed:  The Jeju Air aircraft flew from Seoul to Jeju Island, a popular tourist destination in South Korea recognized for its natural beauty along the southern coast. The aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff, causing a considerable loss of life.

Following the disaster, a large-scale rescue operation was begun, and emergency crews are currently searching for survivors among the wreckage. This dreadful occurrence, which occurred at the end of the year, has surpassed previous aviation disasters. Previously, there were major incidents in Brazil in August and this week in Kazakhstan involving an Azerbaijani aircraft, both of which resulted in huge loss of life.

The Jeju Air crash has been named as the year’s deadliest aviation disaster. This year, several devastating plane crashes occurred around the world, raising concerns about aviation safety.

The first significant accident of the year occurred on August 9 in Brazil. An ATR-72 aircraft operated by Vopas Airlines crashed in Vinhedo, São Paulo, killing 62 passengers. The flight from Cascavel to Guarulhos crashed near a residential area, bursting into flames. The victims’ remains were severely charred, making identification difficult. According to the Center for Aircraft Accident Investigation and Prevention, the pilots encountered subzero temperatures during the trip.

On Wednesday morning in Kazakhstan, an Azerbaijan Airlines flight crashed, killing dozens of people. The plane crashed near Aktau in Kazakhstan while flying from Baku to Grozny, Russia. Fortunately, 25 passengers were recovered alive.

This year has seen a number of catastrophic mishaps, including the fatal Jeju Air tragedy. On January 2, at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport, a passenger airliner collided with a Coast Guard plane. The collision claimed the lives of five Coast Guard members. However, all 379 passengers and personnel aboard the commercial airplane were successfully evacuated.

On January 5, an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 MAX-9 made an emergency landing in the United States after a part of the fuselage detached in midair. The plane was flying from Oregon to California, and despite the risky scenario, it landed safely. There were 171 passengers and six crew members onboard.

Another terrible tragedy occurred on July 24 in Nepal, when a Saurya Airlines flight crashed during departure from Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport. Of the 19 individuals on board, 18 died. The critically injured pilot survived and eventually revealed details about the incident.

In addition to commercial aviation mishaps, several military planes crashed this year. On January 24, a Russian military plane carrying Ukrainian prisoners of war was shot down by a Kyiv forces rocket near Belgorod, Russia. All 74 on board were killed, including six crew members and 65 Ukrainian soldiers.

On March 12, another Russian military aircraft, an IL-76, crashed in Ivanovo, killing all 15 people aboard. An investigation indicated that one of the engines caught fire, causing the collision. In addition, on July 12, a Sukhoi Superjet-100 crashed while flying from Tretyakovo to Vnukovo airport. Three crew members died in this tragedy.
