Australian media criticized Kohli by portraying him as a ‘joker’. On the first day of the Boxing Day Test, rookie Sam Constance was involved in a contentious incident with Virat Kohli, which sparked much debate. The Indian star batter received widespread condemnation for the event and was even punished by the ICC. An Australian media outlet has insulted Kohli by depicting him as a ‘joker.’ The event occurred on Thursday (December 26), following the tenth over of the first day’s play.
Australian media criticized:Â Constance was gently walking towards his colleague Usman Khawaja in the middle of the crease after finishing the over. Kohli walked quickly while adjusting his fielding position and collided with Constance’s shoulder. Following the crash, they exchanged harsh words, which Khawaja eventually diffused.
For colliding with Sam Constance, Kohli was fined 20% of his match fee and given one penalty point. The Indian star hitter was penalised for breaking Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct. Following the first day of play, match referee Andy Pycroft handed the punishment on Kohli.
Following the ICC’s fine, Australian publication The West Australian slammed Kohli for the bumping incident with Sam Constance. They dubbed him a “clown,” comparing him to a comedian and altering a smiling photo of Kohli to make him appear like a joker.
Former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan slammed the Australian media for portraying Kohli as a comedian. He told Star Sports, “Australia has treated us unfairly in the past. Throwing balls at us, using aggressive language, and shoving—these situations have all occurred.”
