Clash between BNP and Jamaat in Gaibandha for not inviting BNP leaders as guests to a religious assembly. A conflict between the BNP and the Jamaat broke out in Saghata, Gaibandha, over the omission of local BNP leaders and activists from the guest list of an Islamic gathering. The event left at least 13 individuals injured. The fight occurred on Saturday (December 21) in Paltan Mor in Saghata Upazila, Gaibandha.
Clash between BNP and Jamaat in Gaibandha: Among the injured, BNP worker Zakirul Islam, who was gravely hurt, was admitted to Bogura’s Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital, while Jamaat workers Abdul Hannan and Jahidul Islam were taken to Gaibandha General Hospital. Others received local first aid.
According to police and eyewitnesses, a religious gathering would take place in the Sardarpura region of Sardarpura Union in the upazila on December 29, with Nahiduzzaman Nishad, Vice President of Gaibandha District BNP, as the major guest. According to the event’s promotional poster, various local BNP and Jamaat leaders would be special guests. Local Jamaat officials and activists reacted angrily when the names of local BNP leaders were mentioned as guests.
Following this, on December 26, Abdul Aziz, a local Jamaat member, arranged another Islamic meeting in the region. Nahiduzzaman Nishad, Gaibandha District BNP Vice President, was also the event’s chief guest. However, no local BNP leaders were invited as special guests. Last Friday, Jamaat and BNP leaders and activists argued about the subject in Saghata Bazaar.
It is also reported that on Saturday afternoon, another dispute erupted between both sides in Saghata Bazaar over the same topic. A chase and counter-chase ensued, resulting in a confrontation. After hearing the news, the police arrived on the site and took control of the situation. During the nearly hour-long pursuit and clash, at least 13 persons on both sides were injured.
Selim Ahmed Tulip, Secretary of Saghata Upazila BNP, stated, “We were stationed at the market when suddenly, Jamaat leaders and activists gathered, armed with sticks, and attacked us.” As a result, five or six of our leaders and activists were injured.
Several attempts were made to call Saghata Upazila Jamaat’s Amir Ibrahim Hossain and Secretary Abdul Gafur, but their phones were discovered to be turned off.
Mohammad Badsha Alam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Saghata Police Station, stated, “After receiving the news, the police brought the situation under control.” The army is now patrolling the region.
