Clashes broke out at Lakshmipur between two factions of the BNP injured 15 people. Clashes and vandalism erupted in Raipur, Lakshmipur, as two groups of the BNP vied for power. The events left at least 15 persons injured. Party offices, residences, and motorcycles were vandalized.
Clashes broke out at Lakshmipur : The conflicts occurred between Thursday night (December 19) and Friday afternoon (December 20) in the Khaserhat and Baburhat regions of the North Charbongshi Union in the upazila.
The incident injured 15 persons, including Shafique Rarhi, Tahmina Begum, Sanu Begum, Gani Rarhi, Mizan Khan, Kabir Hossain, Billal Hossain, and Zihad.
According to party officials and eyewitnesses, the battles were between two factions: one led by Faruk Kabiraj, Vice President of the North Charbongshi Union BNP, and the other by Shamim Gazi, Secretary of the Raipur Upazila Krishak Dal, over a dominance issue.
On Friday evening (December 20), the Upazila BNP convened an emergency meeting and appointed an investigating committee. Based on the committee’s report, it was agreed that organizational and administrative sanctions would be imposed against individuals responsible.
The investigating committee consists of Z M Nazmul Islam Mithu, Convener of the Upazila BNP, Shafiqul Rahman Bhuiyan, Member, Senior Joint Convener Saleh Ahmed, and one representative from each district committee of the affiliated and allied organizations. The committee has been asked to deliver its inquiry findings within three days.
Meanwhile, BNP leaders and activists from both sides are clashing at the Khaserhat Bazaar and nearby areas. Local neighbors are concerned about the likelihood of another violent fight at any time.
However, to prevent any untoward situations, police and army patrols have been strengthened in the region. GM Shamim, Secretary of the Upazila Krishak Dal, alleged that Awami League leaders and volunteers attacked them on Faruk Kabiraj’s orders. He claimed they stole his fish and destroyed his in-laws’ home.
Faruk Kabiraj, Vice President of the North Charbongshi Union BNP, replied, claiming that under Shamim’s leadership, the area has been occupied and extorted. He added that when leaders and activists who know him well attempt to intercede, it results in mayhem. Shamim supporters have routinely exhibited firearms in the market and destroyed the Union BNP office.
Z M Nazmul Islam Mithu, Convener of the Upazila BNP, stated that an investigating committee has been created into the clash. The committee members will present their report within three days, and those responsible will face organizational and administrative consequences.
Notifying that there is tension in the region, Raipur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Nizam Uddin Bhuiyan stated that the police, together with the army, had gone to the area and got the situation under control. Affected individuals have been urged to make a report at the police station. The cops are on watch to prevent any unfortunate situations.
