Five (5) dead were retrieved from a cargo ship that was stationary in the Meghna River near Chandpur. However, the cause of their deaths remains unknown. Three further people were evacuated from the ship in critical condition.

 

Five (5) dead were retrieved from: The news of the bodies was received today, Monday, after 1 PM. It has been discovered that the ship’s name is MV Al-Bakhera. The ship was still anchored at the time. Around midday, members of the river police and coast guard arrived aboard the ship and recovered the deceased and injured passengers.

Lieutenant Colonel Shams, a Staff Officer with the Bangladesh Coast Guard (Dhaka Zone), confirmed this information to Independent Digital.

 

Initially, police suspected that the cargo ship was carrying fertilizer and was bound for Narayanganj. Last night, a cargo ship was attacked by pirates in Chandpur’s Meghna River, resulting in fatalities and injuries.

Syed Mushfiqur Rahman, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) of the Naval Police in Chandpur, revealed that they were notified via the emergency hotline 999 about the finding of bodies on the ship MV Al-Bahera. Five people were found dead, and three more were in critical condition.

 

The injured were rescued in a bloody condition and transported to Chandpur Sadar Hospital for treatment. The Coast Guard and Naval Police are conducting a coordinated search operation on the ship.

He added that the vessel was carrying fertilizer from Chattogram to Sirajganj. Police assume that all of the deceased were members of the ship’s crew. However, the specific motive for the deaths has yet to be determined.

 

The identity of those killed and injured have not been established. According to reports, the ship was transporting urea fertilizer from Chattogram to Baghabari Port in Sirajganj.
