Five (5) persons in the country have tested positive for bat reovirus. A study undertaken by the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control, and Research (IEDCR) found bat reovirus samples in the bodies of five people in the country. According to doctors, this is the first time this bat-borne virus has been detected in humans, and it can spread by sneezing and coughing. As a precaution, public health authorities advise against consuming raw date palm juice.
Five (5) persons in the country :Â Every year, many people become infected with the Nipa virus after ingesting raw date palm juice. After noticing similar symptoms, the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control, and Research (IEDCR) recently analyzed samples from 48 people. While no Nipa virus was discovered, bat reovirus was found in the remains of five people, marking the first time it had been identified in the country.
According to experts, there is currently no treatment for reovirus. They state that this virus is commonly found in bats, and while it is not as prevalent as the coronavirus, it can spread through an infected person’s sneezing and coughing. Children and the elderly are more susceptible to this virus. Infection symptoms include respiratory difficulties, fever, headache, vomiting, and diarrhea. In severe situations, pneumonia and even brain inflammation may develop.
In this situation, Mustak Hossain, former Chief Scientific Officer of IEDCR, underlined the importance of research to stop the spread of reovirus. According to public health specialists, there is no current risk of a reovirus pandemic in the country. However, they advise against consuming raw date palm juice as a precaution against the reovirus.
In an interview with the media, Mustak Hossain stated, “Where there is no Nipa, we have reovirus. Symptoms are also similar. We must exercise caution when ingesting raw date palm juice. There is currently no vaccination or therapy for this virus. Attempts are being made to create a vaccine for the Nipa virus. Reovirus may now be a topic of research. It is currently unclear if reovirus can spread from one individual to another through touch. As a result, we must proceed with caution.
Professor Saif Ullah Munshi, a public health expert, stated that the virus might spread in a variety of ways. It spreads not only through the respiratory system, but also through eating. However, there is no significant risk of death from this infection. So, there is no reason to worry, but prudence is advised.”
