Four (4) people were killed in conflicts at Ijtema grounds. According to Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd.) Jahangir Alam, two factions clashed for control of the Bishwa Ijtema grounds in Tongi, Gazipur, killing four people and injuring 50 others. On Wednesday (December 18), he met with followers of Saad and Zubair to discuss the clashes and notified press about the four killings.

Four (4) people were killed: The Home Affairs Adviser stated, “First and foremost, I express my heartfelt condolences to the four brothers who were killed last night.” May Allah grant them Paradise. And I pray that those who have been injured recover fast. We shall make whatever arrangements are necessary to ensure their adequate treatment.”

When asked if Saad’s followers would be permitted to participate in the Bishwa Ijtema, the adviser replied, “If both parties can reach an agreement through negotiation, then Saad’s followers will be free to participate. The government has not changed the date of the Ijtema. They should have conversations.

 

He went on to say, “Those responsible for the killings will undoubtedly face legal consequences. There will be no place for leniency.

Amirul Islam Bachchu (70) of Egarsindu village in Pakundia upazila, Kishoreganj, Belal (60) of the Beraid region of South Khan, Dhaka, and Tajul Islam (70) of Bogura have died. The identity of second person has yet to be confirmed.

The injured include A. Rouf (55) from Bhairab, Mujibur Rahman (58) from Mymensingh, A. Hannan (60), and Zahurul Islam (38) from Tongi. Arif (34) is from Gopalganj. Faisal (28) of Savar. Tarikul (42) from Narsingdi and Sahed (44) from Chattogram, Ukil Mia (58) of Narsingdi Pant (55) of Tongi Khorshed Alam (50), Belal (34) of Keraniganj, Anwar (50) is from Narayanganj. Abu Bakkar (59) from Narayanganj, Ariful Islam (50), Anwar (26) from Savar, and Anwar (76) from Noakhali Sadar. Forkan Ahmed (35) of Satkhira A. Rouf (55) of Bhairab, Mujibur Rahman (58) of Mymensingh, A. Hannan (60) of Gazipur, Zahurul Islam (38) of Tongi, and Sahed (44), all from Chattogram. The identity of the other injured victims has yet to be ascertained.

According to Gazipur police and local sources, followers of Maulana Saad intend to organize a five-day Ijtema at the Tongi Ijtema grounds beginning this Friday. However, Maulana Zubair’s followers do not want them to hold the Ijtema there. As a result, Zubair’s supporters had already gained control of the Ijtema grounds. Tensions between the two parties had been rising for several days over this matter.

Around 3 a.m. on Tuesday night, followers of Maulana Saad began accessing the Ijtema grounds via several roadways, including the Kamarpara Bridge and the Turag River’s west bank. Inside the grounds, Maulana Zubair’s followers began flinging bricks and stones. In response, Saad’s followers launched a counter-attack. When Saad’s supporters were finally able to enter the grounds, the two factions clashed on a big scale.
