If extortion money is not given, the hawker and his two grandchildren are threatened with being shot and killed. In Kumarkhali, Kushtia, miscreants have demanded a ransom of three lakh taka from a hawker named Rezaul Islam (57), who sells towels, through an anonymous letter. They threatened to shoot and kill the hawker along with his two grandchildren if the money was not paid by midnight on Thursday (February 13) or if he informed the police.
If extortion money is not given: Rezaul Islam, who received the threat, is the son of Abdul Gafur from Bhatikamara in Sadki Union of the upazila. He sells towels as a hawker on the footpath.
Following the incident, Rezaul filed a written complaint at the police station in the afternoon. In his complaint, he mentioned that he is a street vendor selling towels. Around 2 AM on Wednesday night, someone broke his house window. Waking up to the noise, he went outside and found a handwritten letter from an unidentified person. The letter demanded three lakh taka from him and warned that if the money was not paid by midnight, his two grandchildren would be killed. It also threatened to shoot and kill him if he informed the police or anyone else.
The victim, Rezaul, said, “I don’t know who is doing this or why. My family and I are terrified. I have filed a written complaint at the police station seeking justice.”
Regarding the matter, Kumarkhali Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Solaiman Sheikh said, “The incident is being thoroughly investigated. Further details will be provided later.”
