In Gaibandha a massive clash and vandalism occurred between BNP and Jamaat activists. Jamaat and BNP activists clashed for one and a half hours in the Palashbari upazila of Gaibandha, resulting in brick-throwing, chases, counter-chases, and damage. The incident wrecked several motorcycles and injured a number of leaders and activists from both sides.
In Gaibandha a massive clash…. The conflict took place in Palashbari town on Wednesday, November 20, between 7:00 and 8:30 p.m. in the vicinity of Charmatha Mor and the Upazila Parishad Gate.
Police and residents claim that Rahidul Islam Babu, the Mahadipur Union Parishad’s acting chairman, was accused of wrongdoing. On Monday, November 18, the UP members responded by submitting a motion of no-confidence to the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) in order to have him removed. Jamaat leaders backed the acting chairman in this case, while BNP leaders took the side of the UP members.
This issue sparked a dispute between Jamaat and BNP leaders in the Palashbari Upazila Parishad area on Wednesday afternoon. The situation became tense by the evening. Armed with sticks and indigenous weaponry, the two sides engaged in combat on the Dhaka-Rangpur highway.
Several activists and officials from both sides were hurt by brickbats during the altercation. Their identities could not be verified right away, though. During the event, a number of motorcycles were also vandalized.
According to Officer-in-Charge (OC) Zulfikar Ali Bhuttu of the Palashbari Police Station, police and army soldiers rushed at the area after hearing about the altercation and managed to bring the situation under control by 8:30 PM.
