Poet Helal Hafiz is no more. Helal Hafiz, the poet of love and revolt, is no longer with us (Inna Lillahi wa Inna Ilayhi Raji’un). He passed away in Shahbagh’s Super Home Hostel this afternoon. He was 76 years old when he passed away. According to reports, he was discovered dead after the hostel’s restroom door was opened at 2:15 PM.

Poet Helal Hafiz: The attending physicians at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) pronounced him dead after he was brought there. He is thought to have sustained a head injury after falling in the restroom.

Excessive bleeding caused his death. Helal Hafiz had also experienced neurological issues, diabetes, kidney problems, and glaucoma for a long time. This gifted poet enrolled in Dhaka University’s Department of Bangla after completing his upper secondary studies at Netrokona College in 1967. He found inspiration for his poetry amid the chaotic 1960s. In 1969, he became well-known as a poet after writing ‘Nishiddho Shampadakiya’ (Forbidden Editorial) during the public movement. Bangladesh’s Liberation War is closely associated with the famous lines of the classic poem, “Ekhon Joubon Jar, Michhile Jabar Tar Shrestho Shomoy / Ekhon Joubon Jar, Juddhe Jabar Tar Shrestho Shomoy” (Now is the best time for the young to join the march / Now is the best time for the young to go to war). This poem later struck a deep chord with the general public during the anti-autocracy movement of the 1990s.

Helal Hafiz reached the pinnacle of his fame with the publication of his debut poetry collection, “Je Jole Agun Jole,” in 1986. He stayed out of the spotlight for a long period.
