Six factories of S. Alam Group: A closure notice issued by Mohammad Borhan Uddin, chief of human resources and administration of the notorious business conglomerate S. Alam Group, was posted on Tuesday afternoon (December 24).
According to the announcement, due to unavoidable circumstances, the factories will stay closed beginning tomorrow (Wednesday) and continuing until further notice. However, the factory’s security, supply, and emergency departments will continue to operate.
Six factories have been deemed closed.
Company names include S. Alam Refined Sugar Industries, S. Alam Power Plant Limited, S. Alam Cold Rolled Steels Limited (NoF), S. Alam Power Generation Limited, and Infinity CR Strips Industries Limited.
Two of these are located in Kalarpul, Karnaphuli Upazila in Chattogram, three in Ichanagar, and one in Banshkhali.
At 3:30 p.m., a visit to S. Alam Cold Rolled Steels Limited in the Kalarpul region revealed that more than 100 workers were protesting inside the factory. They expressed their dismay at the unexpected closure notice, claiming that it has put them in a terrible situation with their families.
Earlier, in an interview with British media outlet Financial Times, Bangladesh Bank Governor Ahsan H. Mansur stated that, with the assistance of DGFI, the founder and chairman of S. Alam Group, Mohammad Saiful Alam, and his associates allegedly siphoned off “at least” $10 billion (or 1,000 crore USD) from the banking system after seizing control of several banks.
