The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has voiced confusion over three officials’ invitations to the United States’ National Prayer Breakfast. In this regard, the party expressed regret. According to BSS, the BNP Media Cell published a statement about the issue on Sunday night, January 12.
The BNP has apologized: In a statement signed by Professor Moudud Hossain Alamgir, the convenor of the BNP Media Cell, it was stated, “In light of some news regarding the invitation of BNP’s Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman to the ‘National Prayer Breakfast’ event on February 6 in Washington, D.C., we would like to clarify on behalf of the BNP Media Cell that this event is not organized by the U.S. government.”
The press release continued: “The National Prayer Breakfast has been held annually since 1953, with participation from the U.S. President, Senators, Congress members, business leaders, and prominent individuals from over 100 countries.”
The event is coordinated by the “National Prayer Breakfast Foundation,” a nonpartisan organization. It provides a unique arena for political, social, and corporate leaders to gather, meet, talk, and pray together. This foundation is critical to US policymaking and is committed to promoting global peace and brotherhood.
The statement continued, “On behalf of the National Prayer Breakfast, the event’s co-chairs, Congressman Ben Cline (Republican) and Congressman Thomas R. Suozzi (Democrat), extended the invitation to the BNP’s Acting Chairman.” However, if any individual or media outlet caused uncertainty by published news, we deeply regret.”
On Saturday, January 11, the Media Cell announced that Tarique Rahman, Acting Chairman of the BNP, Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, and Standing Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury had been invited to the United States National Prayer Breakfast on behalf of President Donald Trump.
Following this, the US Embassy in Dhaka emphasized that the US government had no role in planning the National Prayer Breakfast event. As a result, the situation became confusing.
