The price of an orange is two (2) lakh-taka, and that too in Bangladesh! Many people may be surprised to learn that single orange was sold for two lakh taka in Golapganj, Sylhet. Last Saturday night, during a religious gathering (Waz Mahfil) at Ghogarkul Islamiya Women’s Madrasa in Golapganj Ward No. 6, an orange was auctioned for two lakh taka.
The price of an orange: According to local reports, the Ghogarkul Islamiya Women’s Madrasa performed its annual Waz Mahfil on Saturday in Golapganj Municipality’s Ward No. 6. Awlade Rasool Sayyid Asjad Al Madani (R.A.) of India attended the occasion as a guest. During the Mahfil, a local expat gave Sayyid Asjad Al Madani (R.A.) an orange to eat. At the time, the orange was put up for auction in the Waz Mahfil. The auction, which began at 5,000 taka, lasted around 25 minutes. Finally, the orange was sold for two lakh takas.
Maulana Hafiz Yameen, principal of Jamiatul Uloom Madrasa in New York, USA, paid two lakh taka for the orange at the Waz Mahfil. The madrasa management have said that this money will be used to develop the madrasa.
Nadim Mahmud, a local resident who attended the Waz Mahfil, told Prothom Alo that the auction for the orange began at 5,000 taka. The bids gradually increased till they surpassed one lakh taka. At that moment, it was assumed that the price would not rise significantly. However, the price of the orange subsequently rose to two lakh taka. A resident of Golapganj who is an expatriate in the United States paid for the orange with cash.
