In Bagharpara Upazila of Jashore, an anniversary program of a voluntary organization was reportedly disrupted due to an attack by leaders and activists of the student wing of a political party. Three people were injured in the incident, which occurred on Saturday afternoon at the Upazila Parishad premises. A video of the assault has gone viral on social media.
The volunteer organization’s: According to sources, the fifth anniversary of a voluntary organization named “Bagharpara Samaj Kalyan Club” was scheduled to take place that afternoon at the Upazila Parishad premises. The program included a cake-cutting ceremony and distribution of blankets to the underprivileged. The Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), Shovon Sarkar, was supposed to be the chief guest at the event.
Club President Nafis Khan Liton alleged that just before the program began, 15-20 activists of the student wing, led by Nafis Iqbal Isa, launched an attack at the venue. Three members of the organization were injured, and a motorcycle was vandalized during the incident.
Liton mentioned that the injured individuals are receiving treatment at Jashore General Hospital. The matter has been verbally reported to the UNO and the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the police station, and preparations are underway to file a case.
In response, Nafis Iqbal Isa, the Upazila student wing convener, denied the allegations, stating, “I have heard about the attack, but no leaders of the student wing were present there. I have been out of Jashore for several days. The student wing was not involved in the incident.”
Bagharpara Police Station OC Abdul Alim said that upon hearing about the incident, police were immediately dispatched to bring the situation under control. Until late at night, no formal complaints had been filed. Necessary action will be taken once a complaint is received.
UNO Shovon Sarkar said, “Before attending the program, I was informed about the disturbance. At that time, I was in my office. The police promptly reached the scene and restored order.”
