Australia’s first innings came to completion with 104 runs. Hazlewood, Australia’s final hitter, edged the ball behind the stumps in the tenth over of the day on the final ball thrown by Jasprit Bumrah. Rishabh Pant, however, was ill-prepared and was unable to properly grab the catch. Before the Indian wicketkeeper could reach the boundary, the ball sped out to his left. Australia thus came very close to creating a humiliating record.
Australia’s first innings….. Australia had previously been knocked out for 83 runs by India in Melbourne in 1981. That continues to be Australia’s lowest score against the Asian squad in a Test innings. Australia would have equaled that record today if Hazlewood had been dismissed on that Bumrah delivery. Their current score was 83 for 9.
Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc added 25 runs for the final wicket partnership after surviving by a stroke of luck. Australia was knocked out for 104 just before midday. The hosts were behind 46 runs at the end of their opening inning. It’s interesting to note that Starc and Hazlewood’s 25-run partnership was Australia’s biggest partnership of the innings. Furthermore, Mitchell Starc’s 26 runs ended up being Australia’s highest individual score of the innings.
In Perth, pacers were expected to dominate, and they did. Yesterday’s first day of the Test saw pacers claim all 17 of the wickets. Bumrah and Siraj’s blistering spells left Australia reeling at 67 for 7 at the conclusion of the day after India was bowled out for 150. Australia’s first innings….
Australia was 83 runs down at the beginning of the second day and lost a wicket on the day’s eighth ball. Jasprit Bumrah took the eighth wicket with the first ball of his over, but Harshit Rana’s first over was trouble-free. Alex Carey (21 runs) edged behind the stumps after the Indian bowler bowled a short ball around the wicket.
In the eighth over of the day, Australia lost yet another wicket. Lokesh Rahul caught Nathan Lyon (5) off a brief delivery from Harshit Rana. With a score of 79 for 9, Australia was in danger of being bowled out for their lowest total against India at that moment. Despite making a catch, Hazlewood managed to survive on 83 runs during this time.
In the 46th over, Starc then led Australia past the 100-run milestone with Hazlewood at the other end. They were limited in their options, though. Starc scored 26 runs off 112 balls before being caught out on the second delivery of the 52nd over (the 25th of the day), just before lunch. Australia reached 104 runs at the end of their first innings. In Test cricket against India, it was their fourth-lowest total. Australia’s first innings…
