China is set to become the largest importer of nuclear fuel from Russia. Moscow has drastically reduced its enriched uranium supplies to the United States in response to Washington’s sanctions. Given this, Beijing is on track to surpass all other importers of Russian nuclear fuel this year.

China is set to become…. China has bought $849 million worth of enriched uranium from Russia in the last 10 months, 3.2 times more than it did in the same time last year, according to a customs data analysis. Imports reached $216 million in October alone, double from September.

South Korea also expanded its procurement of enriched uranium from Moscow during this time, bringing the total to $650 million. South Korea is now Russia’s second-largest importer of nuclear fuel.

The main consumer of Russian uranium last year was the United States. But it ranked third in terms of importing $574 million worth of Russian nuclear fuel in the last nine months.

Washington declared earlier this year that buying low-enriched uranium from Russia would be prohibited. However, until 2028, certain imports have been exempted when there are no other options or when it is thought to be “in the U.S. national interest.”

In 2022, Russia’s biggest foreign destination for uranium exports remained the United States, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Nearly 25% of the enriched uranium used in commercial nuclear reactors in the United States came from Moscow. China is set to become….

Nearly half of the world’s nuclear enrichment capacity is under Russian control, and the country is home to the biggest uranium enrichment plants in the world. An estimated 40% of the enriched uranium on the market is thought to come from Moscow.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said at a government meeting last September that certain nations are contentedly hoarding Russian goods and resources in spite of sanctions. He suggested restricting the export of uranium and other strategically significant raw commodities to the international market.
