Clash between 2 BNP groups over dividing gambling extortion money. A fight between two factions of the local BNP over the allocation of extortion money taken from a gambling house in Araihazar, Narayanganj, left at least ten persons hurt. Around 8:00 PM on Friday, November 15, the incident took place in the Brahmandi Union neighborhood of Dohar Maruadi. The conflict occurred between local BNP worker Murad Khan and the supporters of Shahin Bhuiyan, the former Joint General Secretary of the district Jubo Dal.

Police and local sources claim that Emdad’s abandoned home in the Dohar Maruadi neighborhood was converted into a standard gambling den. Local Awami League politicians and activists had been extorting money from this gaming establishment throughout the previous Awami League regime. The political climate in the neighborhood shifted after Sheikh Hasina was overthrown by the Student People’s Movement in a popular rebellion on August 5, but the gambling den continued to operate. There have been multiple arguments and altercations between Shahin Bhuiyan’s and Murad Khan’s supporters due to disagreements and confrontations over extortion money collected from the gambling den. Tensions between the two sides increased last Friday night. Supporters of Murad broke into Shahin’s home and inflicted significant damage. A violent altercation broke out between the two sides when Shahin’s supporters retaliated by arming themselves with local weapons and launching a counterattack. Rakib Bhuiyan (25), Chanaullah Bhuiyan (31), Yasmin Akter (19), Rakib Mia (20), and Hossain Mia (35), among others, were among the ten or more injured.
Among those hurt was Rakib Bhuiyan, who sustained significant wounds on the left side of his abdomen and the left finger of his hand from a sharp weapon. After being brought to the Upazila Health Complex, the attending physicians recommended that he be sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital because of his critical condition. Police were promptly sent to the location after learning of the altercation, according to Officer-in-Charge (OC) Enayet Hossain of the Araihazar Police Station. Masuda Begum reported the incident to the police station, naming Jubo Dal Shahin Bhuiyan, the former joint secretary of the district, ten other people, and ten to twelve unnamed people. Already, two people have been taken into custody and are being questioned. Although everything is quiet for now, police patrols have been stepped up across the region and its environs to prevent any further unfortunate accidents.
