A prosecution has been launched against 34 leaders and activists of the BNP and its affiliate organizations on charges of stealing materials from a thermal power plant. A case has been launched against 34 local BNP leaders and activists, as well as 16 unnamed individuals, on suspicion of taking scrap materials from the RNPL thermal power plant in Dhankhali, Patuakhali, which runs on coal. Aminul Islam, the power plant’s Deputy Manager (Admin), filed the charge on Sunday (January 12) at the Kalapara police station.

A prosecution has been launched: The primary accused in the case are Sohel Molla, Vice President of Dhankhali Union BNP, Shaheen Molla, Organizing Secretary, Kalam Talukdar, General Secretary of Ward 6 BNP, and Firoz Uddin, Vice President of Union Chhatra Dal. The majority of the other defendants are local BNP officials and activists. The accused live in the villages of Dhankhali, Londa, and Gilatla in the upazila.

Copper wires, iron supplies, steel sheets, and other construction materials have all been stolen. According to the case data, on December 24, a group of criminals infiltrated Security Post 13 on the power plant’s boundary wall and stole a substantial amount of materials. The RNPL’s security personnel observed the theft and reported it to authorities. Later, officers from the neighboring police station, joined with RNPL’s own security guards and Ansar members on duty at the facility, raided Gilatla at 9 a.m. on December 25.

During this time, a van was seized containing nearly four tons of stolen scrap materials from the power plant, and the authorities were contacted. The recovered materials were then kept in the power plant.

Later, on the night of January 9, the accused entered into the power plant again and took copper wires, iron supplies, steel sheets, and other items that were later stashed near Gilatla Market. The market worth of these stolen products was around four lakh rupees. On the morning of January 10, the stolen goods were placed into three or four trucks for transportation.

When the power plant’s security personnel informed the authorities about the incident, the junior assistant manager (security) Mohammad Sayem Uddin Babu, executive (security) Md. Mahabubur Rahman, junior executive Mohammad Parvez, and security supervisor Saidur Rahman, with the assistance of police camp members, went to the location and seized a vehicle carrying five tons of stolen goods worth two and a half lakh rupees. The remaining commodities, valued one and a half lakh rupees, have not yet been retrieved.

According to local sources, scrap iron and copper are frequently stolen from the power plant that is now under construction. Influential locals are smuggling these products out of the power facility at night. Mohammad Jewel Islam, the officer-in-charge (OC) of Chalkapara Police Station, said that the matter had been recorded as an official complaint. Legal action will be taken against the accused after the inquiry is completed.
