An elderly man died after being beaten by a Jubo Dal leader. An old woman died after being thrashed by Md. Suman, the former Organizing Secretary of the Jubo Dal in Sandwip Upazila, Chattogram. The event occurred on Monday (January 20) at approximately 12:45 p.m. in Ward No. 9 of the Gachhua Union in the upazila. Ayub Jahangir (62), a resident of Daulatarga House in Ward No. 9 of the Gachhua Union, died.
An elderly man died after:Â According to the deceased’s relatives, Jahangir had a land dispute with a local resident, which resulted in an assault. Jahangir had been imprisoned in connection with the case. About a month and a half ago, former Jubo Dal leader Suman requested two lakh taka from Jahangir’s family in exchange for his release on bail.
In the interim, Jahangir was given bail. Suman demanded money from Jahangir’s family even after he was released. However, Jahangir’s family stated that, despite Suman’s requests, he had done nothing to secure bail, and that Jahangir was released solely through the family’s efforts. Nevertheless, under Suman’s persuasion, the family paid one lakh taka. Even after that, Suman continued to urge them for the remaining one lakh taka. This led to the episode in which Jahangir was beaten.
According to eyewitnesses, police reported that on Monday afternoon, Jubo Dal leader Suman arrived at Jahangir’s house on a motorcycle with two other people. At the time, Jahangir was bathing in the pond. Suman called him out and started thrashing him. Suman once whacked Jahangir on the head with a’self-defense stick.’ Jahangir then fell into the water and was hurt. He was pulled from the water and sent to the Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor pronounced him deceased.
Riaz Uddin, the Sandwip Upazila Health Complex’s resident doctor, reported that Jahangir died before being taken to the hospital.
Since the incident, the accused, Md. Suman, has been on the run, thus his statement could not be acquired. When queried, Abu Taher, the Upazila BNP convener, stated that Suman had formerly served as the Upazila Jubo Dal’s Organizing Secretary, but he no longer has any post. The corporation will not accept responsibility for his personal behavior.
Monirul Islam Bhuiyan, Officer-in-Charge of Sandwip Police Station, stated, “Initially, we discovered that Jahangir was slain by Suman’s attack. There were two other people with him at the time. One of them, Nayan Ali, was apprehended by the police. Legal action will be done upon receipt of a formal complaint about the incident.”
