Charges have been brought against Dr. Yunus and 62 others in international court. Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the head of Bangladesh’s caretaker administration, and 62 others are facing charges in an international court.
Charges have been brought. The charges were filed on Friday, November 8, at the International Court in The Hague, the Netherlands.
Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury, former Mayor of Sylhet City Corporation, filed the complaint while staying in London. The complaint claims that between August 5-8, “genocide and crimes against humanity” were committed in Bangladesh under the guise of a student movement, targeting leaders and activists of the Awami League and its affiliated organizations, Hindus, Christians, Buddhists, and Bangladesh police.
In addition to Dr. Yunus, the 62 accused are Legal Advisor Asif Nazrul, Home Affairs Advisor Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, Jute and Textiles Advisor Brigadier (Retd.) M. Sakhawat Hossain, Environment Advisor Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Information Advisor Nahid Islam, and Sports Advisor Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan.
The coordinators of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement—Hasnat Abdullah, Sarjis Alam, Abdul Hannan, Hasib Al Islam, and Abu Bakar Mazumdar—have also been charged. The complaint comprised over 800 pages of documentation and evidence.
Regarding the complaint, Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury claimed, “I believe I am the first to file (this complaint). Approximately 15,000 victims will submit cases with the International Human Rights Tribunal.
Notably, following the fall of the government in the student and public uprising on August 5, Sylhet’s then-mayor, Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury, fled into hiding. It was eventually revealed that he had escaped to London.
