Two army men are among four nabbed in Dhaka while preparing for a robbery. Police reported that two army men were among four apprehended in Dhaka’s Banani neighborhood while preparing for a heist. According to the police, the arrests occurred on Tuesday night in Banani while the group was ready to attempt a robbery in the Moghbazar neighborhood.
Two army men are among:Â Russell Saroar, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Banani Police Station, informed that the suspects planned the heist in front of Star Kabab on Road No. 17 on Tuesday night. Three more, including two more army personnel, escaped. The two arrested army members have been turned over to military authorities. The other two accused were produced in court and given a three-day remand. However, the OC did not reveal the names of those arrested.
A source from the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) informed that the two arrested army personnel are being disciplined under military law.
When questioned for more information regarding the event, Banani Police Station OC Russell Saroar stated that one of the arrested individuals presented themselves as a journalist affiliated with a nominal organization. He was found in possession of a camera and an ID card from the said organization. A patrol squad from Banani Police Station apprehended the four members of the robbery group after observing a crowd in front of Star Kabab. Several others escaped.
Police found army uniforms, shoes, ID cards, a microbus used in the crime, and lock-breaking tools from the arrested individuals.
Previously, on the night of October 11, 2017, a robbery occurred at a businessman’s home and office in the Beribadh section of Mohammadpur’s Tri-Road Junction. During the incident, the thieves, dressed in army and RAB uniforms, claimed themselves as part of a combined task group. According to the homeowner and police sources, they stole 7.5 million BDT and 70 tolas of gold.
The inquiry into the robbery uncovered the involvement of a former army lieutenant colonel. This officer previously led a unit at RAB Headquarters and was forced to retire from the army in 2019. In addition, the names of many non-commissioned RAB-4 workers have surfaced in connection with the crime.
According to law enforcement agencies, some suspects were apprehended and turned over to military authorities.
