Youth showed a ‘pistol’ after stealing shoes from the mosque. A young man has been accused of brandishing a ‘pistol’ in public to intimidate people after stealing shoes from a mosque in Panthapath, Dhaka. Bystanders managed to detain him.

 

Youth showed a: The incident took place around 2:30 PM today (Wednesday) near the SIBL Foundation Hospital in Panthapath. The detained youth has been identified as Ibtessam Rahman Alfi (18). He claimed to be a resident of Mohammadpur and a student of Bangladesh University.

 

Rajib Gayan, Assistant Commissioner (Traffic) of the Dhanmondi Zone, confirmed the arrest and stated that the pistol found on the youth appeared to be real, but it was not loaded.

 

However, the detained youth claimed that the ‘pistol’ was a toy and that he had stolen due to financial need.

 

According to the police officer, after completing their prayers inside the mosque at the SIBL Foundation Hospital, a group of young men noticed that one of them was missing his pair of shoes. They checked the hospital’s CCTV footage and identified a suspicious individual.

 

Upon stepping outside, they spotted a person resembling the one in the footage and confronted him. At that moment, the suspect pulled out a pistol from his waist to intimidate them, causing them to step back. Meanwhile, a rickshaw passenger passing by shouted ‘mugger!’ which led to a commotion in the area.

 

The suspect then attempted to flee toward the Panthapath traffic police box, but Sub-Inspector Khabir Hossain of the traffic police managed to apprehend him. He was later handed over to Kalabagan Police Station.

 

Officer-in-Charge (OC) Akhtaruzzaman of Kalabagan Police Station stated that the pistol was a toy but closely resembled a real one. Legal proceedings are underway, and further investigation will be conducted regarding the pistol. The youth will face legal action.
