The Constitutional Reform Commission has advocated revising Bangladesh’s constitutional name. The Constitution Reform Commission recommends altering the constitutional name from “People’s Republic of Bangladesh” to “People’s Democracy of Bangladesh.” The commission also proposes replacing “Republic” with “Citizenship Democracy.”

The Constitutional Reform Commission has: The Constitution Reform Commission, chaired by Professor Ali Riaz, delivered their report with reform proposals to the Chief Advisor today, Wednesday. On the same day, three more reform commissions submitted their reports. The three remaining commissions are the Election System Commission, the Anti-Corruption Commission, and the Police Reform Commission.

Currently, Bangladesh’s constitution is known as “The Constitution of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh.” The Constitution Reform Commission’s recommendation states that, “With the consent of the people, we adopt this constitution as the Constitution of the People’s Democracy of Bangladesh.”

The country’s existing constitution states Bangladesh to be a unified, independent, and sovereign republic known as the “People’s Republic of Bangladesh.”

The commission has proposed that the words “Republic” and “People’s Republic of Bangladesh” be replaced in all relevant sections of the constitution with “Citizenship Democracy” and “People’s Democracy of Bangladesh.” However, in the English edition, the names “Republic” and “People’s Republic of Bangladesh” will be retained.

Furthermore, the Constitution Reform Commission has proposed replacing “Bengali” with “Bangladeshi” as the nationality. The commission has advised removing the section that states, “The people of Bangladesh, as a nation, are Bengali.” They propose replacing the present Article 6(2), which states: “Citizens of Bangladesh shall be known as ‘Bangladeshis,'” with this new article.
